Melissa Edwards, owner of Melissa's Childcare, has been named Provider of the Month for December! With 23 years of experience in the childcare field, Edwards has dedicated herself to providing high-quality care for young children and creating lasting relationships with families.
Melissa's journey into childcare started with a personal need. "I had no one to watch my first born, who is now 23 years old, and from there on I have been doing home daycare," she shares. Her commitment to the profession grew over the years as she observed firsthand the vital role childcare plays in both children’s development and families’ well-being.
"My favorite part of the job is observing and experiencing the entire journey of the kids I watch develop, from their early years to high school graduation!" This long-term perspective has allowed her to see the impact of her care, not only on the children but also on their families, who often stay connected long after their children have grown. “I’ve had kids leave for school full-time, and moms still text me saying how much they miss me. They come back to visit just to see me!”
Melissa recognizes that childcare plays an essential role in shaping both the community and the future. "It impacts the well-being of community members by providing a safe environment for young children, allowing parents to participate in the workforce. Child care is an investment in the community's future success by fostering economic stability and essential development skills for the next generation."
Melissa is grateful for the Reno County Child Care Task Force and has benefited from many resources now available to providers. "The Task Force is important for providers who need the necessary training and education to help keep children healthy and safe, like free training and networking opportunities, as well as the Retention Grant and Infant Incentive programs.”
As a childcare provider who has helped shape the lives of countless children and families, Melissa has made a positive impact not only on the children she cares for but also on the community at large.
“Doing childcare benefits the lives of children, by teaching them, helping them learn, and being a positive role model. There’s a fulfillment that comes from knowing the difference you make in a child’s life.”
