When Sophia Corwin attended Abundant Life Childcare and Preschool as a baby and young child, she was probably more focused on playing with her friends than wondering whether or not she would work there someday. She must have had a great experience, because her story has come full circle, and she is now a lead teacher for ages two and three.

“I've worked with Abundant Life Child Care for three years. I started when I was 16. I attended it myself when I was a little baby. Margaret Bass was my teacher; I just love her. I wanted to work in childcare because I love kids, I've always loved kids,” said Sophia.

One might say Sophia comes by it naturally, as her mom has worked at Abundant Life Childcare and Preschool for more than 20 years, and her aunt worked there for many years as well.

She’s grateful for the mentorship, and the community that her coworkers have surrounded her with.

"I sometimes just visit her and see how she’s doing. She'll do the same thing for me--small little check ups just mean a lot.”

Sophia was nominated for this award by one of the parents of the children in her care, and she had great things to say about her:

“She is patient, she is creative, and she is a partner in my daughter's development. She tells me when my daughter does something wrong not to shame or punish her but to include me in helping to think through how to resolve it. And she's trying things to get my daughter to potty train that I haven't been able to get her to respond to. I hope that Sophia will continue to grow in the profession and that she feels valued for all that she does and is!”

Sophia acknowledges that childcare is not easy, but that the benefits outweigh the challenges, and appreciates the support of the community along the way.

“I think childcare is not easy, but it's something to be proud of. It's not just childcare. You're helping them grow into these amazing people. We get to see their personalities, we get to see how they grow. It's amazing,” said Sophia, “And things like the Reno County Child Care Task Force are important because they help us with things like trainings.”
