Accelerator Grant Funds Help Haven USD 312 Open Childcare and Preschool in Yoder

Haven USD 312 has made significant strides in addressing the growing demand for childcare and early education in the community, thanks to the support of Accelerator Grant funds. In partnership with the Reno County Childcare Task Force, the district has been able to establish two childcare centers—one in Haven and one in Yoder—while expanding services to meet the needs of local families.

The Reno County Childcare Task Force played a critical role in helping Haven USD 312 secure the initial phase of the Accelerator Grant. These funds allowed the district to open its childcare centers in August of last year, but it quickly became evident that the demand for childcare services exceeded the available space.

“The Reno County Childcare Task Force continues to be a beneficial partnership for us. They helped us through the accelerator grant in phase one, getting our centers up and running. They have provided us with some additional funds through their infant incentives, enabling us to increase infant slots and purchase necessary supplies and furniture for new classrooms” said Megan Hett, Director of Learning Services, USD 312.

In Yoder, Haven USD 312 converted the former Yoder Charter School building into a space dedicated to early learning. The building had previously housed a K-8 elementary school and an agricultural charter program, but with the closure of the charter program, the district had the opportunity to fully repurpose the facility for early childhood education.

This transformation included opening a new two-year-old classroom and continuing the extended care program for preschool students. The district also partnered with the Reno County Education Coop (RCEC) and the Early Education Center (EEC) to accommodate the growing demand for preschool and special education services. The RCEC and the EEC now operate two classrooms in the Yoder facility, serving children from across Reno County.

In total, the center currently supports around 100 children, offering a range of programs for infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children. The district’s focus on early education is further demonstrated by its commitment to providing transportation for preschoolers, ensuring that children within the district, and even neighboring towns, have access to these critical early learning opportunities.

“Our school district really sees the value in children attending preschool. Anyone within our district can get transported to and from preschool and then also through EEC,” said Megan.

With the support of the Accelerator Grant and community partnerships, Haven USD 312 has created a thriving early learning environment, addressing the urgent need for childcare and preschool education in Reno County. The district’s efforts demonstrate how thoughtful planning and collaboration can make a meaningful difference for families and children, providing a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
