Buhler USD 313 Opens Two New Daycares with Support from Accelerator Grants

Buhler USD 313 is making significant strides in addressing the growing childcare needs of the community with the opening of two new daycare centers: Crusader Corner and Buhler Beginnings Daycare. This was made possible through the Reno County Child Care Task Force’s Accelerator Grant.

This $600,000 grant was instrumental in transforming two existing buildings into state-of-the-art childcare centers designed to serve local families in need of quality, affordable care. Crusader Corner, located at 56th and Plum, will offer care for up to 60 children, while Buhler Beginnings Daycare, situated in the basement of Buhler Grade School, will provide slots for an additional 20 children. Together, these centers address a critical gap in childcare services within the Buhler community and surrounding areas.

Purpose-Built for Children and Families

The design of the new daycares reflects the latest best practices in early childhood education. The goal was to create environments that are both functional and welcoming, with plenty of open space, natural light, and a focus on learning through play.

“We know that unstructured play is important for early childhood development, and the open layout allows children to engage in activities at their own pace while also providing room for more structured learning when needed,” said Kyle McClure, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment at Buhler USD 313. “Our architect Sarah Sipe and her team, Landmark Architects here in Hutchinson, had dome some daycares before. She ensured that we had open windows on both sides so that there was lots of natural light coming in, and a lot of openness to the restroom space so that the supervision of students could be carried out well.”

Cherish Kelley, Director of Childcare at Buhler USD 313, appreciates how the new facilities have made a significant difference in the quality of care they can provide. “It’s fantastic being able to walk in here and not have to worry about things,” Kelley says. “I know everything’s where it needs to be, and it’s really helped my staff get started fresh.”

Community Collaboration and Support

The success of this project is a testament to the power of collaboration. The Reno County Child Care Task Force played a key role in securing the funding and resources needed for the daycare renovations. “Being able to have other people who know what they’re doing really helps. The task force has been a huge proponent of this project, and their forward-thinking approach is vital in solving the childcare issues we face in Reno County,” said Kyle. “They’re always looking for new ways to solve the problem of childcare availability. With this collaboration, we’re not only helping children today, but also ensuring long-term solutions for local families.”

Fresh Start, Brighter Future

The remodels have allowed both centers to open with brand-new, modern facilities designed specifically for the needs of young children. The updated spaces provide a fresh start and a sense of excitement for what’s ahead. “Being able to just start fresh with everything new has really helped us as a team,” said Cherish. “I feel confident knowing that everything is where it needs to be.”

The opening of Crusader Corner and Buhler Beginnings reflects Buhler USD 313’s guiding ethos—Better Together. “Collaboration has been key to making this happen, and the support from the community, the task force, and the Accelerator Grant has made all the difference,” said Kyle.

With two new daycares up and running, Buhler USD 313 is setting the stage for a brighter future for both children and families in Reno County!
